SGA Wants to Hear From You!!!

SGA, the Student Government Association of Longwood University will be making a change to their weekly Senate agendas. As of Tuesday, each Senate session will include a time for public comments. This change is being made in hopes of getting the student body more involved in the SGA and allowing students to see what the SGA really does for the campus community. All are welcomed to take part in the public comment sections of the Senate sessions.

In order to take part in the public comment section the campus community must take some actions prior to the Senate session. Anyone who wants to be part of the public comment sections of the Senate sessions must sign up at least 30 minutes prior to each session. The person will have 2-3 minutes to voice their concern or opinion about an issue on campus. If the information that wants to be voiced is will take longer than 2-3 minutes, people may contact the Vice President of the Student Government Association at sgavicepresident@live.longwood.edu to setup a presentation for the Senate.

The Student Government Association’s Senate sessions take place every Tuesday starting at 3:45 in the BC rooms of the Lankford Student Union. All are welcomed to attend the Senate sessions even if a person does not want to take part in the public comment section. Also please remember that you can speak with members of the Senate regarding issues of concern, please visit www.longwoodsga.org for contact information. The Student Government Association is looking forward to this change and hopes that the campus community will take advantage of this opportunity.

Senate Legislation: Sports Club Council

The Sports Club Council has been active on campus for a few years and they have worked with Campus Recreation to help provide a closer connection between individual Sports Clubs and Campus Recreation. Over the last 3 years the Student Government Association has heard proposals from the Sports Club Council regarding the allocation of a lump sum amount from the Student Government Association that they would distribute to all Sports Clubs.

The Sports Club Council has stated many reasons for this proposal. It is believed that it would create more of a working relationship between Campus Recreation and the Sports Clubs. The Sports Clubs and Campus Recreation would be better able to monitor the Clubs to ensure that they are meeting the requirements set forth by the University. The biggest reason is that the Sports Club Council has a deep understanding of sports and the needs that they have which would prove very viable during the financial allocation process and ensure proper spending of student activity fee’s.

Legislation will be coming before the Student Senate hopefully at the September 29th meeting. This legislation would be a change to the Student Finance Committee Bylaws. In this legislation the Sports Club Council would make a financial request to the Student Finance Committee with final approval coming from the Student Senate. The Sports Club Council would then allocate that lump sum amount to the individual Sports Clubs. Representatives of the SGA would sit on the committee and the Sports Club Council would be required to make a report to the Senate twice a semester as to provide updates on the allocation process.

Senate members are still forming there opinions on this issue, but the Sports Club Council has made this pitch to the Senate for the past three years and its time that the Senate consider this in a proper fashion. If you have questions about this please contact any member of the Student Senate or SGA Executive Council we do want to hear from you.
